Overview

In May 2014, PEM’s founder Satish Kamat reached out to Bansuri with a grant proposal for an irrigation project in Rajwadi, Ratnagiri. He had already been living and working in the region, building self-reliant communities where people could find solutions to their challenges and actively participate in their implementation. His vision of empowerment resonated deeply with Bansuri’s belief in grassroots, long-term impact.

What began as a single irrigation project soon evolved into a series of deeply rooted partnerships, spanning multiple villages and sectors. Over the years, Bansuri’s collaboration has grown organically, shaped by the needs and aspirations of the communities being supported. The hallmark of PEM’s success is not just the projects implemented but the growing ability of these communities to define their own futures.

A Model for Transformation

At the heart of PEM’s approach is collaboration. When a self-help group (SHG) or village identifies a challenge, it is brought to Satish Kamat and together they develop solutions, drawing on expert insights and preparing proposals. The community contributes a portion of the project cost—either financially or through labor—while the remaining funds are raised as grants. Every initiative is rooted in community participation, ensuring not just execution but long-term ownership.

Irrigation and Farming: A Path to Prosperity

The first initiative, in collaboration with the Krushiratna Bachat Gat in Rajwadi, aimed to solve a pressing need—access to water for farming. A government irrigation scheme had failed to materialize, leaving farmers struggling. With PEM’s guidance, they designed a viable plan, which Bansuri funded through a combination of grants and soft loans. The farmers themselves undertook the labor, laying pipelines to bring water from the river to their fields. The result was transformational: 25 acres of land became cultivable, benefiting 25 families.

Inspired by this success, three more SHGs came forward to replicate the model:

●      In Dhamani, 15 acres were brought under cultivation, benefiting 16 families.

●      In Rajwadi, an additional 20 acres were revived, impacting 22 families.

●      In Chikhali, 25 acres flourished, supporting 18 families.

With year-round irrigation, productivity soared. To further support farmers, funding was provided with equipment to enable efficient land preparation. These were not just tools but investments in the future—farmers collectively managed them, renting them to others and reinvesting the earnings into their upkeep. Recognizing the unpredictability of rainfall, the community in Chikhali took a bold step, constructing a water conservation tank on a hilltop, expanding their irrigation capacity to 50 acres. Fish breeding was introduced in the tank, turning a sustainability measure into an additional source of income.
Connecting Farmers to Consumers

With stable irrigation and increased productivity, a new challenge emerged: fair market access. In Rajwadi, we facilitated the creation of the ‘Rajwadi Bhaji App,’ a direct-to-consumer platform allowing farmers to sell their fresh produce at better prices. What started as a simple image-sharing tool for local buyers evolved into a structured marketplace, ensuring both profitability for farmers and affordability for consumers.
Clean Water for Daily Life

Beyond farming, access to clean drinking water was a critical issue. In Bamanewadi, residents pooled funds for a borewell but needed additional support to build a pipeline and storage system. Bansuri stepped in to complete the project. In Bramhanwadi, where women spent hours fetching water daily, we supported the installation of home water pipelines. Today, 55 families have direct access to clean drinking water, dramatically improving their quality of life.
Women-Led Dairy Enterprises

In Shembhavne, a group of women formed the Kamdhenu Mahila Doodh Utpadak Bachat Gat, envisioning a cooperative dairy farm where profits and responsibilities were shared. With financial backing from Bansuri and hands-on training from existing dairy farms, they built a sustainable business. Inspired by their success, another group in Dhamani—wives of farmers who had benefited from irrigation projects—launched their own dairy initiative, going a step further by breeding their own cows and reserving land for fodder cultivation. Their forward-thinking approach has ensured a steady, high-quality milk supply and long-term growth.
Alternative Livelihoods and Entrepreneurship

PEM’s impact extends beyond agriculture. In Guhagar, a vermicompost initiative launched in 2005 thrived, generating an annual turnover of 3.5 lakhs. By 2018, the group scaled up, and Bansuri provided the necessary funds to mechanize and expand their operations. In Rajwadi, we supported a backyard poultry project initiated by a young woman with a physical disability, giving her financial independence and inspiring others. In Tural, twelve women formed the Kokankanya Swayam Sahayak Mahila Bachat Gat to craft paper products. With an initial investment from Bansuri, their enterprise is now self-sustaining, with reinvested profits fueling growth.
Health, Environment and Cultural Initiatives

Community well-being goes beyond livelihood. Since 2016, we have sponsored Holi celebrations in Rajwadi, reinforcing cultural bonds. Under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, we distributed 1,000 dustbins in Sangameshwar Block to promote waste segregation. To protect school children from heavy traffic, we funded a boundary wall for a local Zilla Parishad school. In times of crisis, we have provided immediate relief— in 2019, when pre-cyclone rains devastated crops in Ratnagiri, and we supplied 90 quintals of rice to 80 affected farmers.
Support during 2021 devastating floods in Ratnagiri

In 2021, Chiplun, a leading block in the district was badly hit by torrential rain and unprecedented floods Thousands of families lost their homes and sources of earning.
SANJ SOBAT, was among several NGOs that came forward to help these families and individuals, struggling not only for survival, but to regain their past life of stability and prosperity. After a ground level survey of micro businesses, women were identified, who run small food stalls, shops, tailoring, beauty parlour etc. Their financial need was met in the form of a grant or interest free loan.
The Ratnagiri Nagar Wachanalay, founded in 1828, is the oldest library in Maharashtra with a collection of more than 1 lakh books, many of which are rare and irreplaceable. Damaged by the heavy rains, Bansuri was approached to contribute to the urgent reconstruction of the structure to save the invaluable treasure of books.

The Ripple Effect of True Empowerment

PEM’s model is not just about solving immediate problems but about creating a mindset shift. The real success lies in how neighboring villages have sought to replicate these initiatives, inspired by what they have seen. Incomes have grown, diets have diversified, and entrepreneurship has flourished. The impact is not just measured in numbers but in lives transformed—where once there were challenges, now there is confidence, self-sufficiency, and a belief in a better future.
