Aseema
A COMMON VISION
Making high quality & value-based education accessible to children of all backgrounds, with a wholistic approach to child development.
WHat THEY DO
Aseema operates under two models – adopting low-income municipal schools in Mumbai and Bal Shaikshanik Kendra in Igatpuri, Maharashtra.
Aseema set up Bal Shaikshanik Kendra with a view to providing education for tribal children from the neighbouring areas. The school boasts facilities like a library, indoor & outdoor sports premises, a multipurpose hall, adining hall and medical room.
They provide healthy meals that are made at the school kitchen to tackle the issue of malnutrition amongst their students. Vocational training and counselling are also available to the students at this school. Aseema also set up a Community Work Cell to engage with the children’s families, to understand the challenges faced by them, to encourage them to keep the children in school to involve parents in their progress, as well as tackling health and medical requirements.

CORNERSTONES
Aseema’s education program and teaching methods are influenced by the Montessori approach to help the children learn independently and experientially on the principles of curiosity, awareness/observation, exploration & action. The pre-primary class, Jal, has children aged 2.5 to 6 years to ensures that young children are not measured against
narrow age-specific development markers. They look at child development from all sides – education, nutrition, health & well-being, future livelihoods and their communities – thereby giving their students a strong foundation from which they can achieve a better quality of life.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
- Creating an environment that inspires and abets children to go beyond academics, to explore avenues of sports, art, martial arts and much more.
- Supporting holistic child development, that focuses on their health and nutrition, in tandem with parental and community involvement.
- Since the beginning of our association with Aseema’s pre-primary section in 2014, we have supported 210 children.
- Pre-primary class attendance has jumped from 60% to 75%
- The Need Assessment Study has given Aseema a clearer picture of the gaps and issues affecting the children and community.
- An actionable plan was then devised to address pressing issues like Educational awareness among the parents, Community Health Centre, Water and Sanitation, Livelihood and vocational skill building, and so on.
