This project aimed to work with local children to bring about positive behavioural change primarily with respect to waste management. The children, comprising the ‘Bal Panchayat’ were groomed to plan, research and experiment with a model that would achieve such a change. The children were inspired through art, essay writing, drama, skits and ‘ban plastic’ workshops. Street corner meetings and door-to-door campaigns were organised to bring greater awareness on the importance of cleanliness on health. 100 waste bins were distributed to encourage segregation. Employees of Alicon Castalloy led a clean-up drive in the village to inspire ownership by locals.
In an extremely challenging environment, faced with strong cultural & social stereotypes – the year long relentless mobilisation bore fruit. It led to the construction of 3 composting pits and a space for dry waste segregation for solid waste management on panchayat land.
